It's A Dog's Life - Or is it?

Have you noticed how dogs like to play? You can pat them, play fetch and get them to roll over when they're in a good mood. They will be your best friends and do what they can to please you.

Make sure you look after that dog though, as one day you will realise the dog isn't there. Why? Maybe because it has found someone else to serve or it wasn't even really your dog!

Maybe it occasionally visited you but it slept and ate elsewhere. It just enjoyed spending time with you whilst you treat it well - but you didn't own it, the dog just made the effort for you.

Can anyone really OWN another being!? In a dog's mind there is no superiority, just equality.

Then it moves on just like The Littlest Hobo, to where it is needed and/or wanted next, having briefly spent some time with you playing and barking. Maybe it will be back - or never be seen again.

If you've said goodbye to one, you may be lucky enough for another dog to appear and give you company.

Perhaps everything that happened wasn't lessons for the dog - but you... Have you ever wondered that it might not be a Dog's life but yours that you need to look at?

♫ "Maybe tomorrow..." ♪

My new landlord in London has a lovely dog. I'll remember to be nice and treat it well.

You know you’re not from London when…

-------------------
Bobby Gill Just did a trip on the tube with my nose in The London Paper whilst ignoring everyone. OMG, I may have been infected by Londonitis! :-0
-------------------

Whilst on the tube I did read a great article by Kirsty Ross about being an expat living in London. I think this applies to anyone from outside the M25 to be honest, it's a whole cultural shock.

----------------

"You know you’re a foreigner living in London when...

• You have no idea what that mess inside the kettle is, especially seeing as you bought it only three months ago.

• Asked, “Alright?,” you answer, “I’m fine, why?”

• Come summer and 17C, you find yourself actually contemplating slipping into a bikini (you too, boys) for the park like everyone else.

• You catch yourself complaining, then cut yourself off, afraid you’re becoming “one of them”.

• You’ve learnt never again to sit upstairs on the number 38 bus at night after breathing in secondary crack smoke from the junkie behind you.

• You’re amused watching Londoners tell off tourists who stand on the left… after learning the hard way yourself.

• You feel raped and pillaged of your annual leave by making an obligatory trip “home”.

• Heading to a summer music festival, you pack your gumboots (aka wellies) rather than your thongs (aka flip-flops) and a bikini/boardies.

• You no longer own sunscreen.

• You find yourself feeling prudish about Page 3 girls.

• People think you are the local crazy lady when you fleetingly smile at them in the street.

• It takes a while to learn what people are talking about when they refer to “the city”.

• You discover that sanitising hand gel exists and learn that you’ll die without it.

• You get weird looks when you mention your “pants are wet”. Meaning, of course, you stepped in a puddle.

• You think chocolate bars are a bargain.

• You keep falling for Ryanair’s “free flights” deal – even though they’re not free – and then bitching about the £10 credit-card fee.

• You discover drugs are cheaper than at home… unless you’re from Colombia.

• You’re the only person making a bee-line for the office window when it snows.

• You go to fill in a tax return and you’re told you don’t have to (huh?).

• You take your piggy bank of trash coins to the bank and learn they’ve never heard of a coin-sorter. Start bagging, bitches!

• You can walk into your kitchen, bedroom and bathroom by pivoting on one foot.

• You can’t believe you have to bag your own groceries… and be the one offering friendly greetings.

• You order a pint and find out the barman went to the school just down the road from where you grew up.

• You find it fascinating that riding on the Tube turns your snot black.

• You used to think the grass is greener back home but began to realise the grass is greener wherever you are now… "

Source: Kirsty Ross is a reporter at thelondonpaper – for one more day. But that won’t stop her from writing about her travel exploits…unless she runs out of food and starts eating her hands. You can follow her Expat In The City blogs at www.kirsty-ross.com

Bringing you the World's Best in London!

What Would Bobby Do? Move to London :-)

Many people complain that time and distance to get to events in London is too much - and that's even before the costs of food and accommodation. For those that are committed to their success you don't hear any of those excuses, they just do what is needed to get and/or stay ahead.

I used to travel all the time and now I have moved to London (making frequent visits up North to host the Northern Property Network and be on the XL North West Leadership team). I've even swapped the YES Group North for YES London when I can make it.

I now get to go to all the major events without travelling too far and meet some fantastic people.
Despite the economy at the moment (which the media says is now recovering but that's a different story) there are many others who are just getting on with what needs to be done.

I've been fortunate enough to know a lot of the events organisers here and they are attracting some great talent. Not only does London have a lot of the country's best presenters, speakers and business people who you can come and meet anytime - They are now bringing you much more talent from abroad as well!

I can usually get access to advance tickets, best prices and discounts as well! So let me know if you're hosting or attending an event and I'll see what my network of friends and associates can do for you.

Presentation Skills with Joanna Martin

I’m not sure if you’ve heard of Dr Joanna Martin, however you have almost certainly seen the results in action. Joanna's success in coaching people how to make money has made her one of the highest paid, OUTRAGEOUSLY successful and well-loved speakers today.

How Ordinary is your Life?

At last night's XL meeting Steve Ireland brought along a great short film about an ordinary life that becomes extraordinary when there is someone else there to watch it. It's called 'Personal Spectator' and you can watch it below and see how it makes you feel, all the way to the twist at the end. Do you live an ordinary life like everyone else? Do you exist and do people notice...

Some of the observations that came out of this were how people behave differently when they're being observed and how it creates a different energy. Do you really exist if there is no-one there to observe?

The Fred Factor was mentioned about how even ordinary people can make a difference every day.

Was the girl's life different from that moment on?
Why did the guy do what he did in the film?
How does he feel at the end - and you as a spectator?

The film really highlighted the small difference between just existing and really living. We are all unique and no-one is just ordinary. All it takes is the time to notice the little things. Hattie gave me a voice-over as I sat there discussing my views and it was a really strange experience similar to the film Stranger than Fiction. All of a sudden every little thing I said or did was important.

To keep our ' moral code' we could pretend someone is watching and resolve never to do or say anything you wouldn't want to see on the front page of the newspapers.

Hopefully you aren't comfortable living in the shadows. Do you need a Personal Spectator or do you already act as if you have a real existence and people notice that you are alive?

You may notice there are a lot more questions than statements that I've written. I'm sure you'll agree though, that it is what you think that is more important than what anyone else says...

We ALL make a difference whether we know it or not. There is an impact on the lives of others created by us just living every day! You are the author of your own story, write a masterpiece that people will enjoy and so will you, that will be remembered for a very long time to come.

Have you heard of the Fred Factor?

"The first time I met a "Fred" was just after I had purchased what I called a "new old house." Located in a beautiful, tree-lined area of Denver called Washington Park, the house had been built in 1928. A first-time homeowner, I'd only been living there for a few days when I heard a knock on my front door. I opened it, and saw a mailman standing there.

"Good morning, Mr. Sanborn!" he exclaimed cheerfully. "My name is Fred and I'm your postal carrier. I just stopped by to introduce myself, welcome you to the neighborhood and find out a little bit about you and what you do for a living." Of medium height and build with a small mustache, Fred was an ordinary-looking fellow. But, while his physical appearance didn't convey anything out of the ordinary, his sincerity and warmth were noticeable immediately.

I was taken back. I'd been receiving mail for most of my life, but I had never received anything like this kind of an introduction from my postal carrier. But it did impress me as a nice touch.

I replied, "I'm a professional speaker. I don't have a real job."

"If you're a professional speaker, you must travel a lot," said Fred.

"Yes, I do. I travel anywhere from 160 to 200 days a year."

Nodding, Fred went on. "Well, if you just give me a copy of your schedule, I hold your mail and bundle it. I'll only deliver it on the days that you are at home to receive it."

This was amazing! But, as I told Fred, that was probably not necessary. "Why not just leave the mail in the box on the side of the house?" I suggested. "Then I'll pick it up when I came back into town."

Fred explained, "Mr. Sanborn, burglars often watch for mail building up in a box. That tells them that you're out of town, and you might become the victim of a break-in."

Fred was more worried about my mail than I was! But after all, I realized, he was the postal professional.

He continued, "Here's what I suggest. I can put mail in your box as long as the lid closes. That way nobody will know that you're gone. Whatever doesn't fit in the box, I'll put between the screen door and the front door. Nobody can see it there. And if that area becomes too full of mail, I'll just hold the rest of it for you until you come back into town."

At this point I started to wonder: does this guy really work for the U.S. Postal Service? Maybe this neighborhood had its own private mail delivery service. Still, Fred's suggestions sounded like a terrific plan to me, so I agreed to them.

Two weeks later I returned home from a trip. As I put the key in my front door lock, I noticed that my doormat was missing. I was puzzled; I doubted that anyone was actually stealing doormats in Denver. I looked around on my front porch and I found my doormat in the corner.

It was covering something.

Here's what had happened: While I was gone, UPS had misdelivered a package sent to me. The box was left on somebody else's porch five doors down. Lucky for me Fred the Postman was on the job. Noticing my box on the wrong porch, he picked it up, carried it down to my house and put it out of view. He also attached a note explaining what had happened, and then tried to make it less noticeable by placing the doormat over it. Not only was Fred delivering the mail, he was now picking up slack for UPS!

His actions really struck me. As a professional speaker, it is easy to find and point out what's "wrong" with quality, customer service and business in general. Finding examples of what's "right," or even praiseworthy, is much harder. Yet here was Fred, a gold-plated example of what personalized service looked like and a role model for anyone who wanted to make a difference in his or her work. Because of Fred's example I started sharing my experiences with him in speeches and seminars I presented across the country. Everyone, it seemed, wanted to hear about Fred, whether they were in a service business or manufacturing, high tech or healthcare. Audiences were enthralled and inspired.

Back at home, sometimes I had a chance to share with Fred how his work was inspiring others. I told him about a discouraged employee who had been receiving no recognition from her employers. She wrote to tell me that Fred's example inspired her to "keep on keeping on" and doing what she knew in her heart was the right thing to do, regardless of recognition or reward.

I related the confession of a manager who pulled me aside after one speech to tell me he never realized that his career goal all along was to be "a Fred." He believed in excellence and quality as the goal of every person in any business or profession.

And I was delighted to tell him that several companies created a Fred Award to present to employees who demonstrated the same spirit of service, innovation and commitment that he did. Someone once sent Fred a box of homemade cookies, care of my address!

As for myself, I wanted to thank Fred more formally for his exceptional service. When Christmas rolled around, I left a small gift in the mailbox for him. The next day, when the mail was delivered, I found an unusual letter in my box. The envelope had a stamp on it, but the stamp wasn't canceled. That's when I noticed the return address. The letter was from Fred the Postman.

Fred knew it was illegal to put a letter that wasn't posted in the box. So, even though he personally carried it from his house to my house, he still put a stamp on to keep it legal.

The letter said, in part, "Dear Mr. Sanborn, Thank you for remembering me at Christmas . . . I am flattered you talk about me in your speeches and seminars. I hope I can continue to provide exceptional service. Sincerely, Fred the Postman."

Over the next ten years, I received consistently remarkable service from Fred. I could always tell the days when he wasn't working my street just by the way the mail was jammed in my box. When Fred was on the job it was always neatly bundled.

But Fred also took a personal interest in me. One day while I was mowing the front lawn, a vehicle slowed in the street. The window went down and a familiar voice yelled, "Hello Mr. Sanborn! How was your trip?" It was Fred, off duty and driving around the neighborhood.

To this day, I can't tell you what motivated Fred. I know he didn't get paid more for his extraordinary work. I doubt he received any special recognition from his employer (if he did, I never heard about it). I know he wasn't privy to any exceptional training or incentive programs.

One thing I do know: Fred, and the way he did his job, is a perfect metaphor for anyone who wants to achieve and excel in the 21st century. Truth is transferable, and the four principles I learned from Fred apply to any person in any profession.

Inspired by Fred the Postman and the countless other Freds I've met, observed or been served by in numerous professions, I wrote The Fred Factor. It contains the simple yet profound lessons all the Freds taught me. Anyone can do them. Everyone should. By learning how to be a Fred it's possible to do extraordinary work. And that means being an extraordinary person as well-something we all want to be."

Who really matters?

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the ‘Peanuts’ comic strip. You don’t have to actually answer the questions. Just read through, and you’ll get the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five World Cup Football winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss World Competition.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.

(edited by me for an international audience on the web)

How did you do?

The point is, not everyone of us remembers the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

---------------

Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one.

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special!!
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the most.

Share this with those people who have either made a difference in your life, or whom you keep close in your heart, like I did.

---------------

So once again I ask "Who really matters?"

You do...

Hugs, Bobby
